Light Upon (In Awe & Wonder)
*Bible Reference: Luke 2: 1 - 18
And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid” (Luke 2:9 NASB)
Right before this moment, the shepherds were tending their flock but not freely and without worry as we may be inclined to think. No, history tells us they were tending in difficult times of taxation preparing for a troubling census that would exploit and oppress their lives. They kept watch over their flock in times of darkness; thus heavy was the yoke of burden upon them.
“How can I survive? How will I make ends meet this week? Will I have enough for me and my familia?” were thoughts that perhaps permeated their minds and thoughts not too far from ours today.
On this dark night, suddenly a light shines upon the shepherds. Light Upon comes from the glory of the Lord and Light Upon is born today unto them in the city of Bethlehem.
“Jesús Mesías, is His name and He has come for ALL!” tells the angel.
This is the Good News Las Buenas Nuevas, that Salvation is here, Salvation is now and the Shalom we seek IS among us today! We no longer carry the yoke of burden but have seen Salvation wrapped in cloths lying in a manger.
“Could this be our Liberación y Paz? Let us go and tell the people!”
What does Luke chapter two reveal to us then from the eyes of the shepherd?
That our humble King came to the lowest of lows, in our darkness, and in a manger as Light Upon us Luz entre nosotros. God’s outpouring of peace, blessing, and well-being came. It is here and will continue to be here porque Dios esta aqui. God reigns in our lives, over our circumstance and will continue to reign forevermore.
The people wondered all that was told to them by the shepherds at the time of receiving the news of Jesus’ birth. Amazed and in awe and wonder they sat in that cold, dark night hoping and believing that their redemption and liberation has come. Hearing the news of a Savior being born that day in Bethlehem brought forth a hope filled anticipation as divine movement was in their midst. In this story, we discover a peace unlike any other, a reign uninterrupted, unparalleled, and a beauty only God can give to humanity. In awe and wonder, we discover a Light Upon that comes and finds us in our darkest places bringing Salvation and Shalom entre nosotros today.
